Elsewhere on this site, you will see that Murray Linkert began his working life at the age of eight, on the bread wagon doing deliveries with his dad. Though his physical condition prevented him from helping out at our Wilberforce location after the age of 81, he was still a welcome daily visitor. It took him almost these last 6 years to accept the fact that he could no longer ‘work’. Although I don’t believe he ever came to really enjoy these ‘retirement’ years, those of us at the bakery were still blessed to have him spend most of his time with us here, seldom missing a day until September 2008.

On January 2, 2009, he died in Lindsay Memorial Hospital. Sadly for a man who always hated to sit still, he spent the last three months of his life in hospital, and a nursing home.

On January 11, we gathered in the bakery that he often called his “other home”, the building he had helped put up 22 years earlier, to honour and remember Murray. Surrounded by pictures and memorabilia, we laughed much, shed some tears, but mostly focused on how very blessed we were, in having had this extraordinary man, of such rare calibre, in our lives.

With great sadness we let you go, made bearable only by knowing that you now have no pain, and are truly free of your suffering.

It’s been an amazing honour having you as mentor and friend, Pappy.
Remembering you forever as a man deserving of great honour,
Love, Pappy’s Crew
